Life wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows for me, I was always “that girl” getting into trouble.
As a young girl, my mom would spend most of her time working—so I ended up spending all of my afternoons at the Boys & Girls Clubs which at first, was not my favorite place to be.
The more time I spent at the Club, the more I started to see the Team Members as family. Even when I gave them the hardest time, they saw the good in me and never gave up on me. They helped me with my homework every day and gave me a fun and safe place to be when I needed it most. I’m still grateful for that today.
Today I work at the Club. Because of my experiences I know that you can’t always see what challenges kids are facing since they usually seem so happy and carefree. That’s why I’m always looking for the little things like a change in behavior, their interactions with others, and listening to the stories that they tell to see if there’s anything I can do to help them.
Being a Club Member then and working at Boys & Girls Clubs now has taught me a lot, most importantly, it has taught me that these kids look up to us and admire us.
I want to be that person they feel comfortable coming to when they have a problem or just want to talk. My goal as a Team Member is to inspire the Club Members and make a difference in their lives the same way the Club did for me.
